Best Non Toxic Nail Salon in Houston

Every niner knows the pain of a newly painted fingernail; they jitter and split and look like their owner has bitten off more than their share of sticker nails.

We’ve all suffered from some unfortunate nail polish mishap at some point, and it doesn’t look good. But there’s no need to despair! We’ve turned to Lauren Serhan, colorists at CND Salon & Spa in SoHo, NYC, and other nail pros to find out how to best get nails longer.

1. There’s really no “right” length

Serhan recommends building up a nail with a few layers, whether that’s block or matte finishes.

“Neutral colors help to frame the nail,” she says. “If you are wanting to go bold, try a clear polish and fill in nail gaps, which can help lengthen nails.”

2. Patch up blemishes

“Wearing nail polish for more than an hour or two will make your nail spots more noticeable,” Serhan says. Start with a base coat before painting, “and be sure to leave a small divot at the end of the peel. This will prevent those tiny spits from bleeding.”

3. Eat a snack

“Citrus (especially lemons and limes) are said to be good for nails because they contain powerful antioxidants like vitamin C,” Serhan says. “You should also try eating dark chocolate instead of sugar to stop getting wrinkles on your nails.”

4. Treat your nails to a soak

“Take a hot shower and soak your nails for five to 10 minutes,” Serhan suggests. “The water will put pressure on the nail bed and stimulate blood flow to the nail beds.”

5. Use special primer

“The white polish you put on your nails usually fades too quickly,” Serhan says. “Apply Nail Walls, which is a whole-body nail polisher.”

6. Use Fekkai’s Full Coverage Manicure & Cuticle Gel ($25, buy it here)

“It does its job in two or three days, but you need to come back in three to four weeks,” she says.

7. Don’t use too much varnish

“The humidity we have in the city makes your nail polish peel,” Serhan warns. “Even something like Chapstick will peel or hurt if you’re wearing it too long.”

8. Get into alligator or stoneware

“If you want a wide variety of shades, try these animal and ceramic nails,” she says. “This will give you both short- and long-lasting color options for your manicure.”

9. Work with CND’s new Crystal Top Coat ($24, buy it here)

“This will give you a dead-ringer for painted nails without any wear or damage,” Serhan says.

10. Take a pedicure at night

“The temperature at night is a lot cooler than in the daytime,” Serhan says. “This keeps your nails in tip-top shape, while easing the pain of cleaning nail beds.”
