No matter how much red, white, or blue we choose, we can’t seem to ignore the need for a classic black manicure for that oh-so-tiered fashionista look. We love wearing them all season long, but when the weather gets cool (like it’s about to do in NYC), we wear them extra on those occasions when things get a little more messy.

To freshen up your claws this Winter, opt for bright, bold colors. They’ll enhance your already glittery nails, so that you can leave the polish at home and play with shades such as hot pink, yellow, and emerald green.

“Nails are too few and far between for me to tend to any more formal preparations like manicures,” said Febreze spokesperson Stella Bak, who, like we, prefers to let the gels and acrylics do the job. “Also, I like to treat my nails to a bit of black liner when I’m doing my eyelashes and lip liner, which is a lot easier to do than trying to fit a pair of nail clippers between my hands and strike the perfect strike while playing with my nails!”

Of course, in those freezing-cold moments when you need your nails doing the work for you, it’s best to start by figuring out your go-to shape first, so that you can concoct a color plan to complement your shape.

Keep reading to discover 15 nail designs for this Winter to give you some inspiration.

For Penny Pom: To get a single design on your finger, start on the top and slide the cuticle under the nail, making sure that the bottom corner is not too hairy. “This is a great flat color for everyday use,” Stella said.

For Dog Star: If you want a way-more-affordable option, look at a paint based on Envirofido’s Water Flower purple color, which is 3-D in shape and can be shaped with just a few quick layers.

For Jewel Shaped: “I love sticking some diamonds on my nails to glam them up,” Stella said. “I love a classic, vintage, full-on chunky, mahogany color as an inspiration, but if you are feeling bold, a magenta fit for modern socialites can also be used on your nails.”

For Gumball Rocker: To get an almost double-pack look, start on the top and slide the cuticle, so that you’re leaving the lower third (the rounded portion that’s not smooth underneath your nail) bare.

For Cute Nail Cups: If you love polka dots, these are the cutest way to play with them — just lift the back and forth to reveal your design (a solid blue is great) or add a dot or two at random.

For Spindly Nails: This should be easy to work with, since the top tier is fairly easy to remove, but remember to make sure your edge comes down the middle of the nail.

For Scrunchie Paint: If you want to up your comfy game, think plastic — that is, specifically, R2-D2-shaped brush! You can use one of these to prep your nails before you follow up with a polish to create that feel of frosty, neater-but-fresh-look-a-minute hair.

For Vampire Facial: For a scary, but totally different look, follow this metallic silver trend created by Hello Ariel!

For Noisemaker Fingers: You can’t go wrong with this incredibly geometric shape, and it’s perfect for putting some tiny doll bits in the cuticle for a cuticle decoration flair.

For Colored Elbows: To recreate this popular summer trend, just create a more angular, dramatic shape with carefully placed dots. If you don’t like how white your nail color will look, you can add neon pink or red to your nails for more a day-glo, track-suit look.

For Comfy Nails: We adore this unexpected, super-cute way to lay the finishing touches on your nails! Simply dab some color up the top of your fingers in white, and then with a sharpened top edge, follow your lines to give your manicure a more secured, brushed-out look.
