Best Non Toxic Nail Salon in Houston

If you grew up in the 90s, chances are your nail art would take center stage. Whether you admired the style of artists like Jon Boy, Rachel Zoe, Chanel Iman, or Rachel Bilson, professional nail artists would use a delicious variety of creative methods and tools to give your nails a healthy, crisp, and long-lasting look.

But with a lot of nail professionals now using pricey, extravagant makeup products, nail polish seems like the best option for those of us looking to not break the bank while actually looking like a million bucks. To help balance out the beauty fanatic in you, we have compiled six quick tips on keeping your nail salon experience healthy and budget-friendly.

Change Up the Nail Polish

According to Natasha Chauvot, the beauty expert at the Nail Salon Collective, a nail polish trend called “longwear” is good for all your nails. Longwear formulas usually have a special metal that dries out over a certain period of time, so long-lasting polish looks clean and comes out without streaking.

“Not many young people know about this, and when I tell them how it saves time, money, and helps their nails look more refreshed than what would happen in a normal polish application, they are so psyched,” Natasha told POPSUGAR. And how much can longwear polish cost? You’ll probably be paying anywhere from $1 to $10, according to Natasha, depending on the type of nail polish.

Exfoliate Your Nails Regularly

You might not be eating that extra pile of protein, but you can still get rid of that dead skin with your nail polish. “Your natural nails have a dead surface that can give off toxins that cause irritation or breakage,” according to Natasha. The good news is you can buy a color that will dissolve these toxins in the polish, and nail experts swear that the result will be beautiful and healthy nails.

To protect your nails, she recommends exfoliating regularly, as well as using nail polish remover regularly. Her favorite: OPI Amazing Nail Polish Repair Concentrate.

Don’t Apply Nail Polish Using a Knife

These days, you can probably buy a nail brush to help with long-lasting polish, but without one, you’re just dabbling in dangerous DIY nail art.

“Keep your nails away from your hand and use nail cleaners to clean them,” Natasha advised. If you do like to use a gel nail polish, make sure it’s entirely cotton for safety reasons.

Remind Yourself to Step Back

Last but not least, Natasha also mentioned stepping back as the time goes on to avoid unnecessary damage.

“Don’t go crazy applying all at once and depending on one brush to get all your nails perfect,” she said. “If your nails are longer, use a separate brush that has a diagonal “s” when you pull the top of it apart. This gently separates the edges of your nails, but can’t beat real, natural nail growth. Some gel polish is so fast and sharp that this still needs to be done, but you can remove or at least scrape the extra sharp ends off or remove excess polish.”
