It’s cold outside — and you know what that means: dry, split nails. If you’ve been worrying that your arms and hands have lost their waterproof and sheer properties, we don’t blame you. And it makes sense — you’ll probably be spending more time outside than in a salon for Winter, so you’ll want to avoid ruining your digits. All jokes aside, dry split nails can be really bothersome, so we rounded up some low-key suggestions for keeping your talons strong through the Fall and Winter:
Cover up: It’s really important to wear a waterproof, felt-tip pen pen on your fingertips to protect them from moisture — and that’s what you’ll be using to apply makeup, erase bad splashes from your lipstick, and polish them anyway. Just grab a soft, dry marker or black nail polish. Pop a wet sponge or cloth over the skin for up to an hour, and it’ll keep your nails from splitting. See: Finger-Touch Tampons
Pretend you’re…Sunning: While your manicure or pedicure will be mostly dry, you can really protect your fingers from stray body heat by kneeling on a towel and rocking your palms during the midday hours. If you want to get the extra look, then throw on a turtleneck or nothing at all, like this one. Also, make sure to keep your hands to your sides so you don’t get your fingers over-exposed. Chew on this: You may have forgotten this one, but biting your nails can preserve them for longer than dipping your digits in water. By licking your nails as hard as you can, you’ll provide the necessary sealant on your skin. This way, when you dry your fingers, your tendons and ligaments will really relax. Slather on some oil: Although this tip isn’t practical for most of you, it’ll keep nails nice and (almost) dry.
