She’s also a former breast cancer survivor, and when it comes to maintaining a beautiful manicure, Sophia’s approach is all about taking care of your nails while also filling in the blanks. Take care of your nails by reading her tips:

1. Use multi-purpose products.

This is obviously very applicable to beauty, but it’s especially true for your nails. Many nail care products are multi-purpose, and it makes it so much easier to get the nail job done right. Thanks to the internet, you can find brands that have rolled out the multi-purpose treatment formulas, and you can even use a mix of shampoos, conditioners, and nail polishes. In fact, Redken just released their x-Wing Star Wars Nail Polish, which is 100 percent waterproof and finishes with a nonsticky shine.

2. Invest in good quality nails.

Choosing good quality nail polishes is part of maintaining your nails, but also having the right amount of polish on them will make the art look even more professional. Choose cleaner hues so that you don’t have to keep decolletage-bending color on the tips. Dry polish remover and rags are good tools for minimizing white marks on your nails.

3. Choose a shade in the main colors to start with.

Wearing a shade in a main color style will take care of your nails while looking beautiful. White is always going to give you a cool look, but a pinky/pink tone will definitely have you stylish. You’ll definitely get compliments for your nails, so it’s best to choose a shade in a main color style (either the color of the shoe you’re wearing, or a great classic color), and keep going from there.

4. Tackle DIY nail polish with self-adhesive Tic Tac-type tape.

A lot of brands have completely self-adhesive (or microfiber) tape that you can stick to your nails, and then dry them on your canvas with a coat of sealer. Not only is it super easy, but it gets rid of white spots on your nails. Some DIY nail polishes will just use a microfiber tape, but it’s much easier to invest in a tape that’s thinner, so you can store it on your countertop. There are some form-fitting Tic Tac-type tape products that are designed to lay flat and is also part of the overall DIY. You can also use salt spray to make the tape adhere better.

5. Abide by the rules while treating your nails.

When making a manicure, stick to the rules because you want to avoid any heavy chemicals or colors. The sun, moon, or stars (the best colors to use) should not be in the formulation or painting process because they can severely damage your nails. Don’t use chemical base colors and instead use shades in key color combinations. In addition, you shouldn’t fall into the category of those who do flat or false nails or straighten their nails without proper tools.
