Best Non Toxic Nail Salon in Houston

Nail art and black lacquer will forever be a staple for women, but beyond style advice, there are also a lot of us that are getting even more daring in the applications department. Why go to your nail salon or department store when you can have a DIY base coat and 18 layers of glitter (okay, not really) at home? We asked some of our favourite nail professionals for their favorite nail tips and tricks so that we never have to set foot in a salon ever again!

1. Use a file to draw a line down the middle of your nail

Leigh McCourt, Manicurist: “It would work great for a salon or retail space, where your wall is curved. You would draw a fresh line so that you don’t have to fill in everything, and because it is a hollow, flat line, you can mark the base of your nail properly.”

2. Line the tips of your nail with metal

Erin Bracken, Manicurist: “I love creating lines with metal objects. It is great for cutting, closing off air leaks, and as a spray artist to do gels. I use them for a thinner trim when I create sharp lines.”

3. Foil a small spot on your nail

Christine Mercado, Hair Colorist: “If your nail is fine, you can always just blot the nail and then put a clear glaze on. You can also use dryer sheets. You don’t have to wait to get the shine back, you can apply it right now and it will last much longer than oiling the nail in between.”

4. Use a compressive force pad

Julian Consuelos, Salon: “This helps to hold your nail in place, so it can be advanced or varied with a new design on it.”

5. But leave the remaining nail fine

Jaime Carmignani, Topping Artist: “Sometimes things will crack or split, and it’s easier to apply a thin covering of the edge just where the crack or split started with, than to remove and then try to make it in a cool pot. Remember, this is for your fingers! You will need to brush through the nail pad to keep everything from moving around too much when you fill in the edges.”

6. Keep a shiny tip with the wax

Joi Castille, Barber: “Wax has a wonderful effect of giving a glossy tip! Wax can work really well on a black polish, because it will wear easily on the tips.”

7. Take a tiny hairpin

Samantha Faerschueler, Hair Colorist: “I like to take a small hairpin and bend it in a small bead to keep your edge. So you can build something out of something.”

8. Get the Right Angle for your Vines

Jillian Prosek, Exterior Designer: “Vines work great for black, but if you have a similar color in white (taupe), the wood grain in the gradient shape will be visible. This makes it easy to cut the shape. I like to create the shape with a triangle at the middle (shown above) and then raise it up with the pointy tip, so that there is a mark that won’t budge.”

9. Put on some polishing oil

Laura Pizzuti, Celebrity Stylist: “Put some oil on your fingertips. It helps to hide any mistakes. Also, it helps make nails look longer and more crisp.”

10. Use a salt spray for spray polish

Sarah-Jane Volpe, Hair Colorist: “If you’re using spray paint, you can usually find a salt spray spray on the market. The salt spray puts a thick layer on the nail, and prevents drying time.”
