Nails may be the simplest things in the world — little round sighters filled with tiny black dots — but, as with anything, they can get a little complicated. Spending hours at a nail salon can cost a lot of money, and messing around with them can get on a person’s nerves. So to save time and money and make sure they look their best, you can check out these three easy tips to get the perfect ring of nails.
1. Prep beforehand
Since the black polish we apply starts on the inner side of the nail, it’s important to prep the nails two days before applying the color for maximum protection. Rinse off the polish with water to remove any residue (you don’t want to have any hazardous substances on your hands!). Find the instructions on the nail product and follow the directions. Avoid removing the gel immediately after application, as if there is any residue on the excess polish, the gel will actually remove the latex and form a seed like an albino potato. You want to use the clear treatment within 24 hours of applying the black polish. To save time, use electric nail polishers that need not be used after application.
2. Twist nails
Since most nails use nails — both your fingers and toes — we can’t just use the dry nail polish remover we use in the salon (with the exception of clear nail polish in a can for easy removal). To make the process fast and easy, alternate which side of the nail you’re using the polish on. Don’t worry if you want to use only one side of the nail or several sides; there’s a minimal difference in your nails. To make it even faster, heat your nail polish remover in a small oven, like in a can or Ziploc bag, instead of in the bathtub.
From my experience, sometimes it is better to do both stripes and stripes, alternating the two and relaxing at a manicure salon while your nails are being worked on. Don’t use conventional rolling pins to clean your nails; it can cause the nails to crack and separate. Using disposable plastic sheets of paper towels instead will help protect your nails. To remember, you can apply the dip end to both ends of the fingernails to get a smoother and finer application.
3. A deep clean
The most important aspect of a manicure is to take care of the nails, not the polish. If you keep using the same polish with the same polish remover and expecting perfection, you’re bound to see abnormal or uneven nail color. As soon as you take care of the nails, it will ensure a smooth, even application of the color. Don’t worry if your nails get tiny little scabs; they’re normal, and the tips of the nails will stay smooth even after the application. Don’t use pesticides or chemicals on your nails; it can give you allergies.
