This Writer Taught Her Daughter to Take Better Care of Her Nails — Here’s How She Did It

Bea Porgie from DIY Builders has been taking care of her nails since her daughter was born. She was surprised to see that her nails had completely deteriorated, and had nothing to do with the state of the world at the time.

“By the time she started kindergarten she was completely divorced from her own nails. When she was crawling, she would never step on her own nails, as she was afraid they would fall off.” She saw the nail color start to change as a result.

Bea had spent five years trying to nail down a pedicure routine that included 10 different ways to peel, dry, and polish her nails. So when she saw the issue was deeper than manicures and pedicures, she knew she had to act.

“When I was cleaning up her toys, we were talking about the nail issue,” she shared with POPSUGAR. “I could see through her the blue veins on her hands. I pulled her out of the toy before I had to push on them. I took her to the salon and explained everything to the staff.”

Since then, Bea and the staff have learned about things like caulk, little acid sealers, and the importance of protecting nail beds and skin to prevent the kind of damage that infected wounds show when they are exposed to harmful acids.

Since then, Bea has taken an active role in her daughter’s nail care regimen. She spends at least an hour on her hands and her feet daily, while she she watches her daughter play, to clean her nails, applying top coats, washing her hands, and buffing her nails once a day.

“I have an manicure twice a week and a pedicure once a month. I’m pretty strict about the amount of time spent. I have a big bag filled with different peels and oils and some glue. On some days I make my own cleanser with coconut oil and dead sea salt. Other days I get my nails done with L’Oréal Crema Safeguard at home. It’s helped me immensely!”
