Nails are one of the most common things we do to our bodies — every part of it. But let’s be honest, the reason we add polish to our nails regularly is because we like doing them. Luckily, we’re experts. POPSUGAR talked to a few nail art pros, including my colleague Katie Daftari, who shared some of the best tips on how to make “buttons” and hands tougher to break and restore damaged or chipped fingers — tips that we can all try ourselves. If you’re on the hunt for healthier nails, these pointers will definitely help make them last longer.
Make a Buffer Zone
Now that we’re aware that nails get brittle, it’s important to do what you can to give them a break. To do that, a buffer zone with a nice neutral color should be created around the nail, as this will provide the nail about 15 minutes of breakage before making an indentation. See below for more tips on how to create this buffer zone.
Wait a Little
Once your nail has three to five minutes of breakage (around the time it takes for it to sink), polish should be applied directly to the open area that you’ve formed a buffer zone around. This will help prevent further damage to the nail.

Repeat Steps
You’re probably wondering what else you can do to polish over a damaged area. Here’s where a little repetition could help. First, create a buffer zone around the nail. Then, begin to repaint or polish the area with your chosen manicure color. It’s a good idea to use a thin layer to protect the area as it is still developing and before you apply any permanent polish to the manicure.
Using a Beauty Blender
If you prefer to apply paint or polish directly to your nails, this is a great option. Use a Beauty Blender to apply liquid polish directly onto the affected area. A pencil can also be helpful in applying this method.

Create a Buffer Zone With Organized Nails
Also a great option when applied to the tip of the nail, simply creating an anchor-shape nail around the nail can also help prevent pain and reducing the possibility of having nails falling out. This is done by putting nails that create space around the nail center down (and flat) and maintaining a dimension above the nail space that maintains a flat effect above the nail and creates a buffer zone.
Think of DIY Brushes
Another option is to make your own before you even get to the nail salon. Decorative but still realistic-looking, DIY brushes can easily be made using various household items (metal bangles, bowties, etc.). These DIYs can also be reused for housework and everyday day-to-day activities.
