What You Do All Weekends Is Saying a Ton About You

Nail polish is the perfect accessory because it’s inexpensive and lasts a long time. With that, comes an unfortunate and constant upkeep cycle of blisters, dryer burn, chipped cuticles, and bad habits. These tips from Brooklyn-based nail technician Leslye Nelson will get you off the nail-biting train once and for all.

Use Nail Polish Lasting Effects to Remove Blisters

“Instead of popping your nail polish when your blisters are running, leave it on to gently remove the dead skin around your nail. This way, it’s less likely to make your nail break down.”

A Tip for Controlling Dryer Burn

“Dryer burn is a little bit worse on bigger and fatter nails, but it’s still a bad thing and you shouldn’t leave it untreated. I use a ‘pod’ solution, which is made of lemon juice, baking soda, and a baking soda paste. The baking soda helps to trap the water vapors and heat, and in the long run, the solution will de-pressureize the burn and make it less painful.”

Read on for two more of Leslye’s tips, plus all of the nail-biting solutions we can think of.

Take Care of Your Nails

“I always recommend washing your hands when you put nail polish on, and I also like to follow up with a deep-tissue massage. Our nail beds are made up of the connective tissue beneath our fingernails, and if they’re in the wrong place, the nail bed will break down or become brittle, which is really bad for your nail. And massaging your nails can also increase circulation and support your nails.”

Wrap Your Nails in a Washcloth or Blanket

“Another idea I like to use is to wrap your nails in a clean towel or blanket, which will give them a nice, clean base, so they won’t look so brittle. It’s something a lot of nail technicians always do to keep nails from breaking down.”

Use a Dash of Mattifying Solution

“Because most nail polish lasts around two to three weeks, you can use a dab of one of these before every polish application. This will help keep your nails hydrated.”

Bring a Tissue and Snack with You

“If you are taking a bath with your nails, I recommend bringing with you a tissue and some veggies so you have something to eat.”
