When the weather gets cold, everyone runs for a heater . . . or a manicure. It’s the one place in a dark room where you can have uninterrupted fun with nail art. However, right after the holidays and before Spring comes, most people don’t feel the urge to fill their nails with vivid colors for the season. Even though those cold winter days are starting to look a little longer (except for two-minute freezes) so are our nails. Luckily, we’re still in the holiday spirit, and this January it’s time to embrace colder weather with nail art.

Maybe you’ll switch to a bold manicure in honor of the upcoming Oscar season . . . Or maybe you’ll find inspiration for all your Winter manicures after following Star manicurist Caroline Incandela’s Instagram adventures. The New York City native wants you to know all your nail color decisions this Winter season should make your jaw drop in shame (you know, for her sake, and not because of the bad glitter eyeshadow). On Monday, she posted her favorite ice bucket paint ideas, then posed with a picture of herself wearing her 2017 winter-themed acrylic nail art.

When asked about her tips to completely nail-up your nails for the season, she didn’t hesitate to provide advice. “I love a neutral color base,” she said. “I personally always think it looks better,” but she did then explain how that doesn’t have to be boring. She simply prefers to put a mix of the more traditional base coat and a secondary color like beige, green, or blue over a base coat, and then give your nails an additional coat of color.

If you want to choose your base color, you’ll want to keep the same color for the edges (below the base coat) and choose a shade similar to your base color for the edge. In addition, you’ll want to paint your nails in the base color once a week until the months of March, April, and May when your nails need to be painted extra often. That is because your nails grow a bit faster in those months.

If you need a little extra confidence, start prepping your nails a week before your winter nail-painting appointments. “Drink lots of water and be gentle,” she said. “Brush each polish off one at a time if possible.” And since you can’t bend your nails when your nail polish comes off, she recommends placing cotton balls on your nails to prevent any chipage.
