What to Do When You Biting Nails

Stopping nail biting is not easy, and some argue that it’s not even a habit — it’s a reflex. There’s even been some research that suggests people who are habitual in that area are actually at a lower risk of certain diseases.

One way to stop biting nails is by learning to bite only on the nails that feel the most comfortable to you.

Nutritionist and author Evelyn Langenstein said two of the easiest ways to stop biting are by eating snacks in the middle of the day — when we are more likely to eat — and by munching something between bites.

“What works for me and my family is to keep two different snacks with us all day. It’s usually three-compartment, 12-inch bagels or gluten-free cinnamon rolls, and then one for an emergency bite,” she said.

Langenstein also said there are two things you can do to stay safe while biting nails.

“A smart strategy is to chew constantly,” she explained. “Then stop until you’re ready to resume,” using that time to cool down your hands and safely remove the offending nail.

Also, try to avoid biting on one or two items per bite. That way, there’s a concentrated area, and it’s easier to pull away without biting the nail clean off. “Choose a line of nail,” Langenstein said.

“Even if you can’t watch what you’re doing, it can be distracting, so you can use a fun toy instead of a finger to exercise a hobby,” she added.

My assistant, Anna Scherer, recently developed an article for POPSUGAR that offered tips on how to stop biting nails, whether it’s eating, pausing, distracting, or even using makeup to distract. You can find it here.
