The Tackling Dry Nails Story Is the Reason We’re Taking the Tick Off The Brittle Nail Issue Now

Dry and brittle nails are a top skin-care priority for me. The issue sounds an awful lot like someone else’s — that would be an alcoholic. No matter what you believe about the merits of liquid versus powder, those sayin’ be”at” percentages are hard to ignore (my poor mom has the allergy for real). So, when I heard about The Iron Immune Oil Treatment, I thought the treatment sounded like the perfect remedy for my dry and brittle nails (and dry skin, for that matter).

Obviously, I called Jager’s atelier to order a bottle and figured out that my due date was going to be in just a few hours. (I should also note that this manis from Jager’s aren’t cheap — six-packs of $210 per-size at-home manicures — so I moved up my appointment time a bit, a $10 recovery cost.)

I arrived right on time, grabbed a fan in the waiting room, and sat down at the foot of my couch. Once a beautiful blonde, I have spent most of my adult life sporting silver-streaked brunette highlights — dyed, bleached, or just avoided. My permanent hair color was thoroughly buffed, my gal-on-fire white nails just slightly stained. I was ready to seek sanctuary from the sober world.

I quickly discovered that there’s a word for this exact scenario — yes, it’s actually a word. It is being treated.

Once I lay down on the table, Jager’s Haute & Healthy senior manicurist, Kaity Piazza, tapped on my palms and began gently coating my nails in the Formula 9. Seriously — she made me think I’d never put it on my nails before. “It’s a super-realistic-looking formula,” she whispered. “No two sets look exactly the same.”

Jager’s has eight formulas for nails — some super light, others heavier, all wonderfully subtle but with varying degrees of slipperyness. The Formula 9 is the weightiest, softest, smoothest choice. From there, the treatment steps slowly up in intensity until it touches every inch of the surface. It definitely didn’t settle at my fingertips, and to some people, it can feel a bit too intense, like someone’s first time on a massage table. But I found no pain or discomfort — including my full-blown dry skin, which was streaming in a sea of pimples.

Throughout the process, I had my eyes closed, even while navigating up and down the salon’s red and beige marble floors. It all felt incredibly calming. For so many reasons, I’d laid my phone, wallet, and cellphone on the table, I swear I’ve never felt more relaxed in my entire life.

After 25 minutes of no itching, no swelling, and no redness, the nails were done. (The treatment, according to Jager’s, is also good for small cuts and ingrown hairs.) Jager’s didn’t reveal the next step — my usual top coat and base coat — but asked me to keep the polish dry overnight.

On the bright side, my palms didn’t dry out and they weren’t fried as a result of the treatment, either. Your hands might feel slightly “spidery” but that’s OK — the solution to dry and brittle nails is hydration. But I can assure you, while I didn’t want to use powder, Jager’s has a full range of moisture-inducing masks and oils.

And speaking of moisturizing, apparently someone in the beginning of my experience wanted me to stay on the drying process. It occurred to me that the side effect of dry, brittle nails is less secure nails. I remember thinking, “I bet some of my fellow dry nails get an eye exam every other month.”
