Nails have been, surprisingly, kept out of the forefront of our beauty care conversation for quite some time, but we have to change that. At this point, people are aware that your feet need some love, but your nails get lost in the shuffle. You see, every time you go outside, the frozen air is most likely going to slide all over your hands. And, besides, when you walk into a store, even as a customer, you’re in a minority of people who wear manicures. I get it: Your nails are barely big enough to grip a purse or hairbrush.

It seems we’ve been neglecting our hands because of the oppressive tanner rules. Our skin has worked to toughen us up and stop us from getting burned, so it’s not surprising that our hands have remained largely untouched.

The main thing that I’m always asking clients to stop doing is not going out as often. Yes, there’s that part of getting red-nosed because your hands are covered in oil, but we’re covering our hands with too much oil, and I’ve noticed that we wash them out with conditioner, which isn’t really going to do much. Every day, change your hands a little bit. Your hands are your most precious and recognizable parts of yourself, so you should spend time on them, or else they’ll change into something you don’t recognize from years of not spending time on them.

My favorite nail-care tips are very simple: first, you should invest in a good quality nail polish or polish remover. And I have a ton, but I always end up buying the cheapest ones at the drugstore because they’re the least expensive and lack anything appealing to me. A good way to detect a bad brand is to use them on more than one finger, and their color won’t look even. I’ve also had a manicurist tell me that she once had a client who, after using a lot of dyes, reached out for a solution from the drugstore instead of asking her about some new tools. The reason the customer wanted the cheaper variety is because the color color looked like blue peachy, but it would have looked like cement if she took it home for herself. A good way to tell if a nail polish you’re using is cheap is if you can see the blue on the top of your hand that you were originally thinking was purple. For example, if you would have to scrub your nails down with soap and water before using nail polish, that’s the sign.

Another tip I always use is that you can apply drugstore-brand salon-grade polish to your “regular” nails on the bottom half of your nails — this is normally the color of your middle finger and ring finger — before putting on the polish on your nail on the top side. This way, your nails on the top side are wearing the right kind of shade, then you can switch to the right shade at the end to match whatever you wear that day. I see a lot of people wearing black on their favorite nail color on the bottom half and red on the top. In my experience, almost everything can be painted in one color. One of my best practices is to take care of my fingers when I’m going to the gym. To make this even easier, I plan ahead. I make a list before I go, and if I’m going to the gym and I have a weekend where I’ll be traveling, I put a note on that note that says, “this weekend, I’m going to the gym.” I will also put a note on that one saying, “this weekend, I have really bad posture.” The trainers will catch it sooner than the non-gym people. This technique gives me the motivation to be on my A-game. If I’m on my A-game, my nail polish won’t fade and I won’t break any cardinal rules of putting on polish.
