Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that nail salon manicures are big business. They’re supposed to leave your fingers looking healthy and fingerless, but is there any downside to these treatments? No, not really.

Most of us don’t have to pay top dollar for the service, so it’s easy to justify paying for something we don’t use every day, but let’s be honest — who doesn’t want their nails to look less soiled, more polished, and clean? What we’ve all been conditioned to believe is that nails should be left drenched in a base coat.

This is false. We should never wash our nails when our fingers are damp, but instead, after we dry them we should keep an eye on the level of polish and file away that last bit of color. If we’re growing nails out, which brings with it some additional bacteria, we should probably just start cleaning with a cotton swab, so the base layer can survive through the wash.

Besides, you don’t have to go at it straight after applying your cuticle oil, either. Just dip your cuticles in cold water, then move them around for several minutes in a regular mixing bowl until completely dry. Then, scrub gently, making sure to get as close to the nail bed as possible (while scrubbing it, of course). This will have rid your cuticles of any flyaways, leaving you with a flawless base coat. This is essential for making sure you never have a nail painting disaster like you did with my childhood nail artist!

If we do end up scrubbing our hands after trimming, we should do so within 10 minutes, and we should try to avoid using a scalpel because it can spread bacteria along the cutting. Another tip is that you should make sure to clean any cuts, chipped, and smudged nail polish. From there, you could continue to apply your base coat to your fingertips if you’ve got the time.

However, for the most part, we should never wash our hands or our nails when we use dryer sheets.
