This time of year, nails are splattered with glitter and glittery glitter — but it’s not just the men and women who rely on glitter on their nails. Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury recently shared her favorite tools for nail art, including highlighting cream and nail polishes in layers for a tingling effect.

“Nail polish tops all other makeup tools I use,” Tilbury told POPSUGAR. “I love highlighting polish and fingergels with added glitter. The sparkle is permanent, easy to rub off, and just as wonderful for setting makeup at night as it is during the day.” Before you start applying glitter to your nails, keep these tips in mind.

First, determine the length of your painted nails so that you have confidence as you apply a layer of glitter to each nail bed. Each nail bed should not be lifted more than one millimeter.

“I use a sticky top coat on my nails so I can paint in layers for a wash-off effect,” Tilbury said.

Before you tackle glitter nail art, be sure to use a clarifying polish remover. The bad news is that if your polish contains perfumes, creams, or oils, use a scrub, as the polish becomes incredibly thick and doesn’t dissolve when exposed to water or heat.

In addition to citrusy oils (such as OPI’s Scentable Nail Color in Sunkissed Orange, OPI’s Silver Brite, Essie’s Mildly Amused, and OPI’s Scentless Luxe), darks and matte shades in materials such as shellac, acrylic, and synthetic cement will help keep a perfect shine, while matte hues in a matte stone will absorb the glistening on each nail bed. And never go too glitzy on your nails — gingers love sparkle, but not if the nails are too chunky.

Nail polish toppers, such as a glitter cap or bobby pins, are great for adding sparkle and a cool vibe. Make sure the nail polish doesn’t sit too close to the nail beds for your attempt at glitter nail art to be an instant fail. And, of course, keep the color in a set so it lasts.
