Our favorite Instagram account, Widdlytinks, will soon offer a great new tool for your home decor — those pesky concrete walls get a whole new look with their next batch of exterior paintings. The NYC-based firm’s founder and CEO, Stephen Gee, has been perfectly situated to perfect a product for the DIY-obsessed, and you won’t find his do-it-yourself tendencies any clearer than with the sky-high costs (about $80 each) associated with concrete art projects in most metropolitan areas. But it might just be worth the price for your own backyard or apartment.

“Instead of having a row of boring all-concrete houses, you get a lot of cool shapes and pattern,” said Gee. “I like that this wall art is meant to be seen, not just wall covered.”

Widdlytinks’ new concrete wall designs will both lighten up the space, as well as add some fun.

“People thought there were going to be those big metal signs, but this is meant to be more than an ad for a rental company, like all the other ones, so you really get to see the actual vibe of a building,” said Gee. “I think that’s what a lot of people are looking for, to see something a little off-the-beaten-path and to let them pull it together themselves. And this way, you have the peace of mind that the artist really took the time to do that.”

According to Gee, while the walls aren’t exactly used for permanent installations yet, he’s hopeful people will be able to live in them for many years to come, if they choose to build the renovation themselves. The concrete is also stackable and can eventually be shipped wherever they’re needed (think miniature parks!) — and as you might imagine, the blank space inside these walls will change with each paint job.

“We’re starting with a series called ‘100 Projects,’ and you start with something like a low mesh wall for art, painting and going up and up until the ceiling starts to look like that of an art gallery,” said Gee. “We want you to be able to look back to that wall and [realize] you created that much art. Then when you’ve finally built a mural, you bring it back down and [the canvas] won’t look that empty.”

But really, what this product could be good for is the whole DIY-er lifestyle. It might just make your home more beautiful, comfortable, and low-cost in the long run.

“It’s not as expensive as you might think,” said Gee. “The paint is very cheap, especially when you look at typical concrete-based wall art pieces, but they’ll start off at $80, which is still a lot of money, but it’ll take a long time to build them and it’s not cheap.”

Beyond that, said Gee, when you break it down, you could probably put one project on any wall with just a little bit of time. “Because you actually have to make your own wall,” he said. “All of these are things you can pick up at the hardware store, so this helps you do it yourself.”
