Vernon Essent graduated from Parsons and is currently a designer, socialite, mother, and freelance blogger, editor, activist, writer, designer and photographer in the East Village, New York City. While we have only met Vernon in the last couple of days, we are already intrigued by her design vision for Pig and Loft in NYC and subsequently, for herself. We chat with Vernon and her manicurist, Leyla, about manicure-ing one of the most public places on earth. Color of your manicure: Anisea Conti Polka Dot-Inspired Hand Art Leyla: My initial inspiration was to get some type of Manicure behind the bar, and then I was going to get the accouterments (sets) I needed, and then this thing hits me: All the people there are wearing Manicures, and I noticed their self-confidence. I like the idea of how they can look at themselves and feel positive about themselves. Vernon: We’re all the same … That’s important, because sometimes when you think about it, nail polish and polish is the human experience. Like nails. Vernon: There are so many things I want to do in my life. I’ve been cultivating this self-confidence for a couple of years, and I’m really enjoying it now. I want to give this manicure [Pig and Loft] a whole year of dedicated time. It’s sort of like the golden hour where a mani is supposed to come in. Vernon: It’s not as fun as I planned it. I love nails, Manicures, Manicures! Vernon: We’re such different people. They like to talk to people. I’m not the person to just run out and do a nail! We’re like a family now and it’s nice to talk to people more. Vernon crafts in Cleveland and is at the Akron nail salon Budapest Rock City. They offer both gel and acrylic manicures and the next best thing to getting a manicure yourself is going to one of their wonderful colors and getting your own custom perfect manicure at a lower price. For two or three years it’s been a staple, her first-day gift, and I took it everywhere and, of course, my kids were there too. She was like, I forgot I’m coming to town. I get invited to cocktail parties every now and then and I think it’s important to have my nails on display for guys to see because then they see that I’m actually comfortable in my skin. It’s like little strawberries and cream and I don’t usually wear my make-up. I’ve been known to use face creams on my nails and hands and I thought I’d try some lipgloss on my nails. I’ve got my feet wrapped in Havaianas Luscious Feet and now I’m ready to experiment with lipgloss on my nails. Now the best thing about lipgloss on my nails is that I can place it wherever I want! I’ll be a bit more bold with my nails when it’s sunny out, so I’ll go for nude with a touch of purple. And that’s if you’re outside with it on.Now any woman that’s vegan or what I call true meat-eaters should keep applying lipgloss to your lips too so you don’t get dry skin. It’s a very versatile product and really adds an uplifting feel to your outfit so I’m pretty sure you’ll really like it. If you still think lipgloss doesn’t work for you then I totally get it – but I’ve had a lot of people in the past complain that it feels a bit tacky on their nails, and when it’s so shiny and semi-matte I didn’t want to feel that was rubbing it down and I’ve been testing it on my arms, shoulders and legs, which is completely natural and has a very feel-good effect. Today I’m wearing a black dress by Jimmy Choo; I like to pair it with tan pumps, my in-house haircare range Quening’s spray tan and Volkoff Le Noir nail lacquer. I’m wearing the only kind of nail polish I really do like, so to keep it as natural as possible I will use a shimmering nude version from Volkoff. Personally I prefer using glossy nail polishes – I like to match up with my makeup. I’m not really into wearing the whole look in black and white, just the manicure and my statement nail polish, otherwise I would be wearing bright colours. I’m not really into when you have to pick a colour that matches your nail colour so you can’t get a full range of colours.
