As a nail artist with over 30 years of experience, Dominique Fazekas has learned a thing or two about how to use her hands to draw distinctive patterns.
Her world-renowned manicures include having done a nail art portrait of Michelle Obama in the White House that is actually her daughter Sasha. She’s also had one of the largest collections of oil paintings by artist Jeff Koons at her online gallery.
But as much as she knows about the latest trends, she doesn’t rely on products or ads to get the information. All of her tips come from experience.
Her free “I Have One Minute a Week” collection includes tips and tricks on decorating nails at home, including framing them with hand painted cutouts and transforming them into abstract art like a flower or starburst.
“Nails should be more fun than anything else and that also means that they’re less complicated than other areas of beauty,” she told HuffPost. “That being said, you need to be strategic about your choices so the contrast is always right.”
Below are Fazekas’ favorite nail shapes you should attempt at home to get the perfect look.
1. Sock Monkey

You can paint your toes to look like a half-closed sock or you can paint with blue pastels. Fazekas swears by this look.
“It goes really well with candy colors,” she said. “They don’t need to be blush pink, but want to add a bit of color. It’s the perfect combination of fun and funky.”
