From Fenty Beauty’s statement-making textures to bigger iterations of past trends, Nail Trends Now for 2019

There’s no doubt that we already live in the era of color-changing nail art, and everyone can agree the new liquid peels are the hottest makeup innovation of the year. But 2019 looks like it’ll bring even more in-your-face nail art that’ll rival the ’90s shade-changing trend as a fad.

Forget Instagram nail art, now we’re all about the real thing, which will hopefully lead to more mature looking manicures. We spoke to the nail stylist behind One Love Manchester’s Queen Nail with Exquisite International Nail Art, Annalisa DiNucci, to see what the top nail trends for 2019 are.

First, let’s talk about the biggest nail trends from last year. If you’ve got any still hiding in your closet, I’ll be soooo grateful for you. Nail art includes everything from weird nail paintings, to a rainbow of grapes (remember the year A$AP Rocky was filmed with some pink grapes in the mouth?). Will the year ahead be filled with similar nail art, like Dolce & Gabbana’s “Moonlight” or Dua Lipa’s metallic nails from last month?

“Color-changing nails were a big trend in 2017, and it will probably remain as a style,” DiNucci told POPSUGAR. She’s already spotted “rainbow drips,” watercolors, and redefined cat eyes. There’s no bad skin tone or color to look for, which is a relief after so many shades were released in 2017, but DiNucci is expecting color still to be in for the new year. Who knows, maybe we’ll see more turquoise nails or neon-dyed nails? “Yes, something fun!”

Nail polish will also have a huge impact in 2019, which is a mix of old and new. “I think ‘shade-changing’ polish will definitely make a return,” DiNucci shared. She’s already inspired by the OPI “Cat Eye Explosion,” a glittery yellow hue that’s pretty versatile for statement nails, along with this year’s white coiled heel manicure from Nails Inc.

The new colors are what she’s most excited for, but the color trends of last year, including powder-based color and metallics, are completely still popular, she added. DiNucci also wants to see more dainty designs, so we can expect soft swirls, buds, and pastel hues, as well as bold options that are “more couture.”

While these new color trends seem like nothing we’ve ever seen before, trust DiNucci, we’re always looking to change things up. And in 2019, that means going back to the basics. “What we’re really going to see is sticking to basic colors and neutrals,” she added.
