Nail salons in the US are some of the most glamorous rooms in the city, where glitter and sparkle are synonymous with beauty. But nail salons in Houston (which is ranked one of the most expensive cities in the US to live in, according to Bundle.com) are getting a major makeover, thanks to Maryam Naderi, a salon owner who loves beauty but started practicing after being dissatisfied with her go-to salon.

While at first she said she went in search of a beauty therapist who didn’t understand how to use her 10-litre tub of Chanel-infused polish, something started to click for the owner. “I was really inspired by how I felt so self-conscious,” she said.

She began researching nail technology, and discovered the OneNail-Hydro Electricity, a machine that uses radio waves to get rid of nail fungus and microbial bacteria.

After a combination of a Home Renovation Aid, some metals and a cell phone held next to the pack, Naderi went in for the second manicure of her life. Her 18-minute manicure was just as luxurious as it sounds!

When you heard that nail salon owner talking about her manicure, you probably found yourself wondering if you could use a similar technology to do your own nails.

Could it work?

Dr. Shoshita Naidoo, a dermatologist at John Hopkins and orthodontist at ProCare Center, tells POPSUGAR that it depends on what you’re looking for.

Dr. Naidoo says, “if you are in the condition where you don’t have a problem with nail fungus or you want to remove your chipped or discolored nails, an induction manicure could work.”

But she cautions that it’s impossible to remove chipped nail polish without sanitizing your hands.

If your nail polish falls apart, it’s still possible to remove it yourself. Dr. Naidoo says you can clean with a cotton ball or even at home. As long as it’s sensitive or chipped, she recommends using a clear nail polish remover to remove the polish.

As far as taking care of your nails, you should make sure they are healthy and strong, “using a very hot cleansing brush, a tool to roll your fingernails between fingers, and a magnifying glass.” If you’ve got short nails, you should use a white polish remover like Neutrogena White Radiance ($8) to keep them looking clean.

Finally, nail salons are known for generous makeovers, so Naderi’s manicure is definitely some of the most luxurious you’ve ever had. But if you’re in the know, you can even do it yourself — a blessing if you’re wanting to show off your hard work.
