The first time Dustin Kohler h to break the skin on his left hand, he acted faster than he could remember. This time around, they gave him some help.

The assistant nail technician at Better Healthy Nail Spa did his hands a bit better this time, and it was possible to soak the burned skin with Oatmeal, a natural moisturizer. Because the gel polish h a chemical in it, Kohler’s solution didn’t dry his skin too well.

The gel polish caught on to the cuticle and caused swelling. That meant both his hands h to go to the hospital for treatment.

Kohler may not have h quite the insurance policy that Better Healthy Nail Spa offers, but that didn’t stop the dentist from getting on a call to make sure his client got the proper care.

Though Kohler wasn’t sure he wanted to work again, the conversation got him thinking. “I would rather be crazy than have my finger bleed for no reason,” he says. “Luckily, he was right.”

Re more about taking care of your nails after the salon.

1. Take it easy

Your skin has h its work cut out for it, and many services cut into your day. Use this time for things like getting your nails trimmed, shampooing or putting on an easy pair of sandals and shoes. You don’t want to force too much on yourself.

2. Go ice-cold

This might be too much to ask for at this point, but ice packs can help fix gapping blistering skin. It’s especially important in the summer, when the heat of the sun can cause sand to move outward.

3. Set up cleanup station

Some of the blood might stay behind the cuticle, but some will go outside. Make sure you have someone else to take care of that.

4. Wash hands

If it looks like you’re bleeding heavily, get the company of a medical professional. Hand soaps don’t sit well.

5. Don’t file on yourself

Nail dries don’t exactly mean no filing. You might want to sit and remove some of the blistering, but you don’t want to do something that can cause long-term damage. Clean up your file with something warm, like water or soy milk.

6. Reapply after cleaning up

Red stains don’t last long with a band of nail polish. That means there’s no need to wear the actual polish on your skin. Reapply after clean-up.

To avoid future issues, keep your hands clean with soap and water.

7. Take it slow

Remember, staining will fe over time. So, don’t get overly upset. Keep your hands inside, close your eyes and let your skin heal naturally.

8. Tell someone

You may be itching to go back to work, but your doctor is probably worth waiting to get a shot of vice before returning to the salon. If you’re more freaked out, tell someone you know who could show you the signs of rash.

9. Get a new coat

Be patient with this, but after several days, may be better off replacing all your gel polish. The skin needs time to heal.

10. Wear gloves

Grim marks can get blistered. Consider this as an extra layer of protection.

11. Watch the sun

The riskof getting affected increases as you get into the sweltering heat ofsummer. Warn yourself when you see someone with bleeding-y skin or red marks.

12. Take precautions

Gain some protection from the sun by wearing sunglasses, hats and other sun protection.

13. A job to do

If your hands continue to bother you, see a doctor. A physical exam and treatment will help if you decide to return to the salon.

14. Give yourself time to heal

There are plenty of super-allergen creams on the market for redemptive repairs, but there are only so many that can be effective at removing the redness. Taking a break from the salon may help.

15. Plan your treatment

Once you get your hands on a patch, do the patchwork first. Apply it to all exposed skin to establish the natural healing process.

16. Don’t do it alone

Keep in mind that the treatments on the salon table are the first step towards correcting the root problem.

17. Erase the stain

To safely wipe off the problem, invest in a nail soapy compress or bar soap to wash away the stain.

THE GROUPS THAT NEED TO HELP

Any ult who stays in the salon for more than four hours should be seen by a physician first. It is essential that someone close to the person keep an eye on him or her.

TAKE ACTION

If redness persists, see a therapist who can prescribe a safe solution.
