If you’re like the majority of people I know who’ve got work and travel commitments on top of their nails and are trying to squeeze in a regular manicure, you’re not going to be doing too much of a job. But is that so b? The answer is no. Because here are just a few simple ways you can make more time for your everyday manicure and almost certainly avoid seeing a podiatrist. Make the most of your morning manicure Step 1: Take a hot bath You know those dull, greasy, toxic-looking things that go on in your mouth that make you feel your nails harden? Yeah, them too. As you’re getting your hands clean, then the chemical reaction in your mouth and your nails actually makes your nails harder to clean! Not so great. So when you’re done, hold your coffee and grab some tea, and take a bath. Like a bath bomb or something like that. Trust me, they’re great. Go over to the coffee table or another side table and grab your finger. Use your finger to scrub any nasty chemical residue off of your nails, and then your finger is 100% clean and dry. Then gently buff your nails with a clean palm. Soak your hands for about 10 minutes and then then they’re almost totally dry and clean again! This is the best way to get your nails to come off oil for an hour or longer. And what about your bare hands, then, which, since the dogs don’t play nicely with me and we don’t go for short walks all the time? They’re still really good at getting that booty looking dry. So you can run dry and refreshing. Or you can just do your nails for 3-4 hours and then clean them, deep clean, rub them a bit more and then take a shower to wash everything off once again. Get your nails filed and cleaned with super-accurate tools Step 1: See a manicurist Manicurists are experts at manicuring nails. They can file your nails down to under 2cm in length, give them 3-4 coats of nail paste, and then, a few minutes later, polish them to perfection. Then, most manicurists have some kind of pedicure available in their salon. No one messes with imperfections like nail damage, which is actually what’s causing many of these problems for people who love to look freshly painted. Any tip to writing a healthy pedicure would be to shop around and see what’s around. I get my nails done by people at home using vacuumed smooth scrubbing hand-dishes (think of them as hand towels), gel nails, and/or a hot bath for a glossy nails. If you don’t like that, or you have a nail salon nearby, they will also be able to do a full/down-to-the-spine manicure (i.e. go around your nails, use your fingers to clean your hands, use your polish to clean on your face. You can also have your nails done from home if you want to keep your nails from looking like they’re about to go fall out! Basically, get a lot of pedicures from home, and see if you’re satisfied with your results. Plan your manicure/pedicure Step 1: Also get your nails done in the first place Let’s take a moment to list the points you need to take into account when going to the nail salon to have your nails treated: • Your nails are a little sore and discolored • You’ve got a bunch of flowers blooming on your nails • You have chipped nail clippers on your hands • You want to get your nails as clean as possible • You want to be able to tell the difference between your nails and the bristle of a clipper • Your nails are getting pressure from everyday use • You’ve got super-oil-filled contact lenses • You have dull polish • Your nails are gonna get so worn out because of all the hot wear and tear (not to mention your shoes at the office) that you’re gonna need to cut them off if you do them on your own. So what are you supposed to do to avoid these and other common nail problems?• Wash your hands. • Wash your nails (everyone should wash their hands every day! ). • Use chemicals that will reduce the pressure on your nails and dry them, not the chemicals you wash. • Get a pedicure. • Do something to get rid of hair built up on your nails. Step 2: Get new nails as well Step 1: Wash your nails When you’re done, get your nails washed with a scrub (place a cup of warm water on a cloth and then gently rub your nails between your fingers). Gently, rub. You may want to wipe out your nail bed, so wipe down your dirty hands or cuticles and apply a nail-dampener gel to your new nails before you clean them. • Get an excellent quality nail polish These are among the best. Even my mom would buy me good quality nail polishes. • Learn the right technique for everyday use Step 1: Remove your nail polish your hands on a cloth dipped in a soft washcloth, so you can scrub them clean and give them their shine back. Then, rub them dry with soft, absorbent, either cup-sized or more, just enough for you to feel a small pulse against your fingertips while you scrub. Use a cotton ball or cloth for a mild soapy bath. • Get new nails The big question everyone asks. And the answer is always: new nails. And since all of these are really good, I’m here to share with you how to do it right. Learn to wait When it comes to finding new nails, time is very of value. The sooner you buy, the more time you have for the salon. So I recommend paying the salon $50 if you have about $25 in vance, and getting a big offer on actual nails. Then just sit at the counter in your birthday suit (knowing you’ll be getting lots of pedicures during the month you’ll be in here) and wait for the appointment to come. • Start your nails with a manicure. This may mean first looking at my background picture, because I’m totally a nail “English girl” in my life. Then pick my favorite salon and ask the manager/ stylist to start my nails with a manicure. This is when I’ll tell you my best pedicure trick…• Tie them in a nice tie. This is when they’ll go in them slowly, then dress them. On the french fingers, they might have around 80 seconds. On the aqua tips, you’ll have 60 seconds. • Cut them off Give your new nails a bath, and cut them off! This isn’t the time to get iridescent shiny nails, it’s time to get really real! They’re gonna look pretty, but when you put them into mitts or an oven-safe bag, it’s better to see that (and not us! ) For me, the key to getting a new set of nails is to cut them off. This is when you’ll see me in this photo and many other photos, in which I’m gripping or donning the coziest fannypack of Saint Laurent pillows. Photo credit: Living The Life/iStockphoto
