Best Non Toxic Nail Salon in Houston

Growing nails is hard enough (as anyone who’s had them made knows). But putting your hands down over the course of several years to get a “perfect manicure” can feel damn near impossible. Luckily, if you take all the right steps to prepare for the process, you’ll be on your way to polished nails just in time for the holidays. Here are tips from beauty professionals across the country on how to groom, groom, groom your nails, so you can seamlessly slip them on and go — while also getting in some fun family activities like painting your nails and shopping for gifts.

Begin Now

Jenna Killian, nail stylist at Lori’s Nails in Portland, Oregon, stresses that “if you’re outside in the winter, you can’t really get out for long periods of time, so you want to be sure to put your hands in the cold for a couple of hours at a time,” she told POPSUGAR. “This will give your skin a chance to get used to the cold.” Laurie Margolin, aka pannier-clavichordite101, a nail expert who sells vintage gifts at Etsy, told us that she like to start prepping for the application process five days in advance.

Allow Time For Paisley (Weekly)

Many manicurists like to choose a color in the same cuticle shade as the nail polish they are painting. If you look to the nail polish stores to find their color of choice, however, they can require you to go in to get a package. “For colored cuticles, I put white polish on it for two to three weeks,” said Killian. “It’ll wake up those cuticles and help them take it off easier.” Also, for a color that won’t dry out your fingers, Margolin likes to choose a shade of purple that has a “pink overtones,” like Pearl Onyx.

Use A Low Moisture Polish

“I always suggest using organic, low-moisture polish,” said Killian. She also recommends using a polish that has either a neutral undertone or one that will give the color a cool finish. “Depending on your skin tone, it can be a bit cooling on your fingers,” Killian said. “To keep the color from being overly dry, use a lotion first.” For a perfect glow, Killian likes to wear at least two coats of her polish while moisturizing her hands with a rich oil. “Don’t forget to moisturize the base of your nails as well, to keep the color looking fresh,” Killian said.

Go Beachy

Going low maintenance might be a huge part of your manicure routine, but relaxing accessories will be the perfect way to enjoy the holiday festivities. Margolin’s favorite outfit to wear with a long manicure? A floral bikini or floral shirt. She recommends keeping polish on a steady color you can repeat as needed. “Try to have a print on the first and second coat, and then switch out the other side as needed, especially when it comes to pin-up color,” she said.
