When it comes to beauty, there are many steps that go into looking your best. A lot of the time you’ll want to wash and moisturize your face every day and update your routine to improve your skin. On your hands, you want to keep your nails looking beautiful.

Check out these easy tips for beautiful, long-lasting nails from Celebrity Barber Ezra Gensler.

1. Take your time. Take 10-12 minutes to smooth your nails before applying nail polish. Gensler recommends this time as a normal way to apply a new shade of polish. After cleaning your nails, give your nails a good pressing. Once your nails are dry, add on a coat of white polish if you need to remove a previous coat of color, and nail polish remover if you’d like to get rid of the color.

2. Moisturize your nails at least once a week. Nails can get dry due to overdoing nail polish remover, exposed nails during manicures and pedicures, stress, and more. So, moisturize your nails at least once a week to keep them looking good for the long term.

3. Keep your nails clean. “If you make your nails dirty, you will never have them shiny. Keep your nails clean at all times because this will give you smoother nails,” says Gensler. He also recommends washing your hands a couple of times a week to keep your hands sparkling and to avoid sticking with certain products that can chip your nails.

4. Avoid overly greasy colors. Once you apply nail polish, take a moment to dry out any extra oil. Then, choose a neutral color and blend it out using a base coat or sealer. Always coat your hands with nail polish remover on both hands before applying the rest of the polish. “Make sure you don’t just cover the base coat with the base color and use a shorter color after you get the polish off to balance out the uneven finish,” says Gensler.

5. Invest in the right tools. Your barber can provide you with the best tools that will provide you the perfect look, but some look great for different purposes. Gensler recommends the Ria brush. “The Ria brush is the best alternative to a loofah. It has a lower finish and fits a shorter, lighter hand,” says Gensler.

6. Get a good nail file. You should have a good file that you can use to buff off any excess product and buff your nails for a clean and fresh finish. A good set of files won’t cost you much and will definitely improve your manicure. Gensler recommends the Peter Millar Nail Files. “These are great because they aren’t too sharp and they hold up well to regular applications and regular cuts,” says Gensler.

7. Invest in a good set of cuticles. Before you have your appointment, it’s a good idea to pre-cut and/or file down your cuticles for less tip and friction. This makes you look polished.

8. Roll your hands with your foot. Toss on your sneakers and roll your hands in your socks before applying polish. It will make your hands look crisp and dry.

9. Clean your toolbox. Even a small piece of glass can scratch your nails and can also stain the polish. Give your nail polish remover a good shake before applying it. Lastly, before applying nail polish, wipe down your tools so they don’t have any fingerprints on them.
