Cuticles, or dermis, are the connective tissue below the epidermis (the layer of skin covering the head of the foot). Cuticles provide an edging on toenails, and tend to reduce as a woman ages. No need to lose your fingernails, cuticles and corns after you reach your golden years. Cuticles and nails can be restored. But how? And what are some really great tips to help keep your cuticles and nails clean, healthy and looking nice?

Micro-Slicing The only way to keep your cuticles and nails healthy is by cutting your nails, your cuticles and your corns every six to eight weeks, according to Jill Daktol, M.D., Aesthetician/Skin Restoration Specialist with Skincare Addictions in Schaumburg, Illinois. Cuticles can stick to each other or rough up if you aren’t trimmed regularly. “The key is keeping your cuticles clean and easily groomed,” says Dr. Daktol. “Don’t try to squeeze and push them back onto the nail, as you can actually do more damage.” When using a Brazilian Blowout application, wet your cuticles with cold water (15 minutes and it goes from dry to wet!) and then squirt a little bit of the polish to clean and soften them. Then, following the same procedure with a Q-tip (dry to dry), you can gently cut your cuticles off and reshape them.

1. Cuticles and Nails How To: Follow these four steps to keep your cuticles and nails healthy, according to Yakima Cuticle Nutrition Board Certified esthetician Linda Kelly. Step 1: Wash and dry cuticles daily.

Step 2: Rinse cuticles with cool water weekly.

Step 3: If you have to cut your cuticles, lift them gently with a Q-tip.

Step 4: Stop overuse when cuticles appear infected.

2. Boring Sandals Your daily steps to look great include balancing the “natural” beauty elements of your life, says Heidi Lundquist, M.D., Founder of Orgascan and Formerly Nurtured in NYC. With our feet active in different ways, Lundquist believes there are a few ways to balance out the stresses of our busy lives. The best way to balance our beauty lives, and make sure to keep our feet hydrated, is by wearing comfortable sandals. To keep our skin flexible, we need a happy foot. When wearing sandals, look for an ankle-strap style, like a boot. And if you need a stress reliever that keeps our feet relaxed, apply a foot cream infused with aloe vera into your feet.
