For me, something that always seems to provoke lasting self-confidence is a manicure.

I love to get my nails painted as often as possible, because I love manicures for their intricate textures. And lately, manicures have me me feel really sexy, which makes me, well, rey to go.

When I was in college I always needed a manicure to boost my self-confidence, which is why I absolutely loved getting my nails done at the now defunct Clove. And whether it’s an over-sized martini on the side or a scantily-cl body-con skirt, I think a perfectly manicured hand can take just about anything.

I actually have no problem with “having it all” (even though I feel like that way) as long as I get my nails done. So the actual thing that has me most excited about getting my nails done is actually the little touches that are left behind.

I love getting my nails painted to show off the glimmer of the makeup I wear on the side of my face, and I totally mean that. When you match that look to your nails you’re probably showing off a whole new facet of your style.

So in this quest to support the manicure or not, here are a few small things to left behind with your manicure that will make you feel amazing, put that feeling of confidence into action, and can forever change your look.

Make a small work of art, while still letting your nails shine

Make a small work of art, while still letting your nails shine.

Let’s talk about all of this — today and in the future — and keep it in mind the next time you’re going out: Have a good manicure!

Here’s how to customize your manicure to the way you feel:

1. Know Your Skin

Skin is covered in hundreds of self-perception choices that you can choose from. Use products with a rich natural or floral scent to de-emphasize the obvious (raw skin/hard skin). In other words, your skin is alrey vibrating with its own words, so choosing a non-damp, non-alkaline polish design is a smart way to alter that vibration. If you’re going in for natural or organic nails, try skipping gel polish or going light on cream.

2. Agree to Work with Someone Wise

Since you may not have a manicurist in mind, shop online for individual product recommendations. It’s all about having a conversation — it’s not just a test run. Make sure to ask questions and get to know someone with experience in your category. The more educated and understanding you are about your skin, the more you’llbe able to build an awesome manicurearound your personality.

3. Get Some Sun Protection

Thebest way to keep nails clean isto get sun protection. In the freezingcold of January, it can feel like it’s too early to start applying sun protection, but the sun is our biggest predator (and basically heats everything up). ding a layer of sun-protection may feel awkward, but remember — your nails will also do the job.

So, Is Your Manicure Perfect?

You’re perfectly okay. You can ask a manicurist whether your manicure is “great” or “perfect.”

Whether your nails are très perfect or not will no longer define your manicure. Never ask your manicurist what your nails are.

If you ask for your manicure to be “perfect,” you’re probably going to get one that’s not.

will I need the optical splitter? I don’t care! I was only getting haircuts at home and on the phone!!!

no, it is the washing spray or gel. I feel like I am freaking out. Should I be rushing out, or do I need more time?

I don’t have time to be freaking out, because I have an appointment. Ok, much better.

yes, a good washing spray or gel will do the trick for a long and full day’s beauty prep. I hate to be the babysitter in all this, but I don’t want to be upset about my beauty routine! Seriously, I’m your fairy godmother, and you have my full support and time to get your nails done, and fill in a form at nail salon.

would you feel more confident when you are on the beach and feeling sexy because you have your hair high and your makeup done?

Yes, the more comfortable you are with your skin, the more confident you’ll be while you’re on the beach. Washing off on the sand leaves the skin vulnerable to UV rays and bacteria, and can le to damage, so being secure in your skin is a good step in the right direction.

What’s your guilty pleasure, and what’s your beauty secret?

Smokey eyes are my guilty pleasure, no secret. But you know what? I love them! But the beauty secret is curling my hair around my face at least once a week, to keep the color from drying.

Whatever. Take care of your skin, take care of your hair, get your nails done. Let’s move on.
