After you’ve tried a myri of colors and touched up your nails with glossy tops, there’s nothing more important than getting a pedicure (or at least a manicure) – not only does it show that you take care of your skin, but it also raises your self-esteem. “It’s a natural thing to want to look beautiful or glamorous to yourself,” said Kim Barnes, a nail aesthetician, and nail technician in New York City. Barnes said her clients usually seek her out when they’re feeling a bit insecure about their figure and height. Much like a “spa appointment,” Barnes will determine the type of nail they want – polished or painted – and how often to get their manicure (she is an ambassor for Nicks and Cult & Rinchers) and how to do it. “We can create a type of face that is sexy, feminine and effortless. ”
The first step in Barnes’ manicure involves preparing your nails, and includes gently applying a light shine to your polish. “You don’t want to go over the top and have someone rub the polish on your nails, so I start with a base coat. I put my pink color on and use a tiny bit of nail polish. I also apply a thin coat of the dip-dye, which is pigments that our polishes d to the polish,” she said. She ded that the tip of your manicure and the skin beneath the nails needs to have some natural shine for the polish to catch. “My customers really love having a little bit of moisturizer and moisture on their nails so that their nails feel soft,” she said. A native New Yorker, Lisa’s shiny and glam manicures are rare in our fair city. But when we do get a chance to chat with her, she’s as beauty-obsessed as a Brit Spice Girl.
