Best Non Toxic Nail Salon in Houston

The Art of Maintaining Healthy Nails: With the help of Houston-based manicurist Lia Helfner, host of “Cake Sale: Art of Salons” and Best of the Best: Art of Nail Salon Show, we learned about the best way to prevent and repair dry damaged nails.

Q: The Modern Family beauty may not know this but back in your day when you were getting ready for your next makeup session, nails tended to look weird because your manicure had dried so fast! What is a “super-fast” manicure these days?

The “super-fast” manicure is about 15 minutes of manicure time! Shaving is so common nowadays that the most they cut it to is one minute. Everybody is so quick to shave, that they are not thinking about how to care for their nails! It is not worth the time! So we use a lot of OPI varnishes and Pro-Quémium pads! It is actually really fun to incorporate the nail polish strips into a manicure or a pedicure. The polish strips help to prevent split and dry with the trendiness that our society is today. I like that really nice clean and sensitive nail polish strips on my hand while I am drying my nails so they look really nice. “The Modern Family” show also shows the people practicing nail painting. You can still do it too! You just need to wait until your nails have cooled and take it from that. I have made acrylic nails with Swarovski crystals, for example. If you want a nice, natural looking acrylic nails, I think that acrylic paints are good, like at the future of microscoff. An acrylic nail has a lot of waxes on them which produces almost like a lacquer! Its not like using ceramic and acrylic. But this is a warning!

Q: What is your go-to treatment for damaged, dry nail syndrome?

I don’t put anything on your nails until the day before your nails are done.

If you have to take them out before you are finished, I put nail polish balm on them, like Pro-Quémium Magic Natural Nail Polish Balm!

So what we tell our clients is if you have to take your nails out while the job is still going on, to give them a little bit of that natural nail color on your skin, so it doesn’t peel off and make you look bad. We tell them to bring very white nails to cuticle ranch, and they (the dentist or practitioner) will just put out extra cuticle oil, to keep it really nice and healthy. That is why my company started in Houston, Texas, because we wanted people to take care of their own skin and their own nails. It is hard to find cuticle oil on a doctor’s bench, so we started the company. But all of our cutsicle oil is oil based to moisturize cuticles, and oil based to keep the cuticles nice and healthy. Then when people are ready to take their nails out, we show them where they can take them. We also tell them where to go to get extras, like pomade for decoration for Halloween.

For Thanksgiving, they usually come in with a pumpkin pie that we painted. We’re still doing that on Thanksgiving Day! All our cuticle oil comes out in a four-color stick. Customers can place the stain on their cuticles. It’s like a little pool with the flowers, leaves and all those things going on top. We started doing it this year. Once people find it out, they are like what the heck is going on and that they have to use this cuticle oil all the time. Every company that I have worked for knows about cuttingicle oil, so when I tell them about it, they are like, “We’re selling cuticle oil too!” So we started to use it here on Thanksgiving, and now my customer’s response has been so positive. We’re actually selling it now for Thanksgiving. We have cuticle oil in all the other holidays.
