Five Ways to Love Yourself and Love Nails Too

As a people magazine editor, I’m often asked about how people can have more beautiful nails. The answer, of course, is loving yourself first. And then great nails.

While getting a manicure shouldn’t be something to avoid, if you’re unhappy with your nails, beauty is far from being the best part of your beauty routine.

I recently noticed that my toes were hurting, and I thought there had to be something wrong with them. I asked for a pain relief treatment, but since I have no doctor’s appointment until the end of the month, I didn’t think anything else would help. So I consulted with one of my dear friends, a licensed physical therapist. After running a few test strips and popping the joke, she informed me that my foot was the size of a football and that it was almost my full basketball size. Uh-oh.

After doing a little more research, I found out that there is no specific size rule when it comes to your feet. Right now, foot size varies with as many as 15 different factors, like body type, type of shoe, which shoes people normally wear, and whether you run around or walk around. So I decided to chart out how I am in foot size and name my pinkie which is the size of a small dollar bill.

To make matters worse, when I do do a walk-around test, the sole of my foot looks the same size as it did when I was about 30 years old. I thought, “Good, now it’s time to get on the scale. I have to be really healthy for those nails.” After searching the internet for weight loss solutions, I realized that any new pound I lose won’t affect my feet. My advice: just start to lose weight anyway.

It was at this moment I made a key discovery: if you’re always tired, you don’t move as much, which automatically increases foot size, which means we’ve never moved. Follow this with a 50-minute cardio-walking circuit, which, combined with foods like grilled chicken, yogurt, banana, and avocado, will likely get my feet rolling.

When I have a time to go to the salon, I take my daily planner and write down everything I need to do to ensure I don’t sit in my chair too long. You don’t have to try the check-in thing, either. For people who aren’t organized or like to work out while watching their appointment, just be sure to prepare at least six days prior.

I walked into the nail salon a little restless, hungry, and with plans to work on my little girl’s baby feet. Needless to say, I could not have been happier with my results (and a pimple-free foot!). I will never forget the moment I tied the knots into the new, beautiful nails and then wiped tears from my eyes. These are girl’s nails and you are a girl too. When it comes to being healthy, there is no word more powerful than health. And a healthy body is a healthy face.
