Best Non Toxic Nail Salon in Houston

Nails are great fun, too. Your dog loves to crunch down, delight in nipping and bite and chew. If it doesn’t get the chance to play outside, which can be dangerous if a dog gets outside onto a footpath or in the dog run of the park, the vet might need to refer you to a manicurist for the occasional nail.

But because nail clippings are potentially injurious, kennel dachshunds, chihuahuas and other breeds of dogs typically require special nail clipping.

Kerri Ruhl, who owns Petgy Grooming with her husband, says by doing tiny post-clipping adjustments, she has been able to clip those nails without incident.

“I have been doing nails since before the Internet was invented,” she said. “Many of my clients use ‘smooth cutting’ or ‘rhythm’ on their cats. My technique is more targeted. I learn the exact length and orientation of the nail’s stem, alternate the width of the cut, start lower than desired, and time the cut properly to trim the nail to within one millimeter. Most clients prefer the process with a guide.”

This takes practice, but once you’ve learned the rhythm and how to cut the nail, its simple.

Here’s everything you need to know about safely clipping dog nails.

1. Never use nail scissors to cut the nail.

When your dog makes cute cuddly noises, keep the scissors away. Cats may also think fun noises are fun noises, but you don’t want them to get too excited. Therefore, tiny scissors will serve as great accessory to jump around on. When clipping, your first job is to secure your dog’s coattails with a soft nail cuter. Then, just make sure you’re safe before you proceed.

2. Use a decent nail clip.

A standard straight-edge nail clip on top of a steady nail collar makes it easy to safely shorten your dog’s nails.

3. Practice makes perfect.

After a dog has been clipped, give it some extra time to relax.

4. Hang up your scissors.

You should hang your trimming tools out of reach until you’re ready to begin clipping again.

5. If the nail clippings fall off, use a tight braided strip.

This might be the best option for a group of dogs. A metal cutting comb kit, such as this one made by Pet Cable, is the perfect tool for separating up to eight clippings in one go.
