In preparation for the birth of your first baby, you may have skipped over making important decisions regarding how to handle your baby’s nails, which have changed dramatically from tiny squiggles at birth to are now, according to experts, a full eight inches long! “I’ve been a manicurist for 29 years and I’ve never had clients tell me they didn’t know how to trim their baby’s nails,” said Karen Albertson, owner of Nail Art salon in Deerfield Beach, FL.
Before you rush out and fix an online tutorial or book an appointment with a professional, there are a few things you should know that will help you see baby’s nails in a new way:
The Longer the Nail, the Grows Faster
“The nail grow out so fast at this point that it’s harder to keep your hands and feet clean and polished,” Albertson said. “The longer the nail, the harder it is to maintain and clean when you’re holding them. Instead of having to pull off the baby’s nail and grab the safety pin, place a manicure cloth or t-shirt in a shoe.” To stop the baby’s nail from growing too long, simply bend over and tap the nails gently.

Nail Length Doesn’t Reveal More Than You Think
If you’re unsure of the exact length of baby’s nails, Albertson suggested knowing the meaning of the number after you visit a nail salon. “Make sure you’re aware of the number, since more baby’s nails equals more pain,” she said. “They need to get an appointment, so count down the minutes to see them! If you have a few left, they’ll eventually move down the length of the nail and out the other side. Even if they’re only a few inches long, your baby is still covered in nails!”
You May Be Grooming Instead of Nail-Gazing
Nail Nails are typically cleaned by the time a manicurist puts a polish on. “It’s best to put some air into your polish brush and examine your nails through it. If the corners of your nail are stretched out or bare, it means you’re grooming instead of watching the nail grow,” Albertson said. “Even with red clippers in the bathroom, you won’t notice it on baby’s nails. If they’re stained, move the clippers to the opposite finger, rub on the treatment with your fingertip, and let the polish dry — and clean the nail polish.”
It’s Not All About Filling in Peeling Nails
Babies who have appeared on the media are only now being “shown to be beautiful,” and that is one of the reasons they need to mature from baby to toddler and toddler to teenager, said Albertson. “If you don’t know, even know now, that your baby is beautiful, they won’t remember. They need more time to develop,” she said. “Because of this, we need to look at why they need to grow their nails and their nails grow out. In that case, don’t worry. We’ll just have a look, and we can see what’s happening as it develops,” she said. “If you come up with your own patterns, you’ll see them happen daily.”
