While everyone else was focused on how we’ll look on Halloween — ooh la la! — we were eavesdropping and heard a rumor about an intense new mani trend coming down the pike this Fall: nail art. While trying to think of what to bring out for your trick-or-treat costume, we spotted nails with elaborate — and usually risqué — designs. Thankfully, we found nail art had a long history on the runway, so this trend definitely has some lineage.

Highlights from the Spring 2019 shows included a chapstick design from Chloe that now looks like a Black Santa Claus, Balmain’s sawdust mani, and the gorgeous three-step style from Bella Freud that should definitely get you all of the feels. The secret behind these nail art manis is simple, really: ease and access. We spoke to the style pros we interviewed about their process, and they all said paint or a brush is all you need.

“You don’t need any sort of press-on, which is so much more difficult to do. It’s a technique that lends itself to an easy and creative presentation. The finished piece can become a really striking design that is so easily achieved with just a little bit of time and care,” says Edwina Brunner, a nail art pro who teaches at the Salon Works, a Los Angeles nail art studio.

“My manis take a minimum of 30 minutes, but with my latest technique, the process takes up to two hours,” adds Sara Kanarek, a professional artist who teaches through her company, Wet N Wild.

“I wouldn’t advise starting with this unless you are a master nail artist. It is a process that takes a really long time. I definitely recommend getting the help of a professional nail technician,” said another master, Nicole Guzik.

It’s not just for punks and the upcoming school year. With Fall upon us, we can expect to see nails sporting designs that resemble their autumnal counterparts — something that falls in line with our own autumn nail-art trend — rosy hues and autumnal leaves. Here are some of our favorite autumnal nail art looks.
