New York Dog-Expert Marianna Intravida has spent the past 15 years developing one of the largest canine nail trimmers in the U.S.

To help keep your furry friends healthy and trim, Intravida offered up her top tips for making sure you have the most effective system for clipping dogs.

She says the most popular nail trimming tool is the microfiber brush, but don’t skimp on the basic tool yourself because it is imperative that you use the tools on both nails and trimming nails, and that both tools are correctly applied.

“Nails are necessary for the safety of dogs,” Intravida told The Huffington Post. “I think it is great to teach your dog to bark properly instead of yelping if it needs to for access to food and to please the family.”

Each bite takes longer than a light touch. The longer the dog’s nails grow, the more you want to manually control the nailing process.

Choosing the correct size nail trimmer will also save you time. Your dog’s size will dictate where to place your tools to minimize the need for repetitive use.

You also need to keep a drawer for all these tools so you can easily grab a spare to avoid damaging the nailing tips.

The base of the nail trimmer should be hard plastic. The pick should make contact with the nail about three times before the nail comes off.

Nail trimmers should be kept in a place where you always see them, and never tucked in between a dog bed or couch.

Make sure there are no sharp objects nearby, and that a rubber band or safety collar is available in case of unforeseen accidents.

Nail trimmers can be worn around the neck as well as the same plastic canister is worn around the neck of the dog. These usually take the form of a band or necklace.

Use short, sharp fingers to quickly tease out any excess nail ends so your dog is left with no damaged ends.

Nail trimmers should be kept away from both the heel and toe. In many cases, a nail clinician will come in to check the health of the nail and correct any damage done to the nail bed with biopsy-type treatments.
