Best Non Toxic Nail Salon in Houston

A gorgeous manicure, complete with the perfect set of polish to match your outfit, isn’t an afterthought at the end of the day — it’s something that makes you feel your best. The touch of gloss and color, applied wisely, is the first thing you’ll notice in and around your mouth; and when you’ve got nails in tip-top shape, you can achieve that beauty look on the go without ever having to leave your bed. POPSUGAR spoke with Dietitian Heidi Waldorf, the creator of Grass Roots Nail Spa in New York City, to get her tips for getting great-looking, healthy-looking nails with a little extra effort, as well as different ways to keep them in tip-top shape.

Avoid Abrasions

“I always think of nail bumps and abrasions as the nail plate pads getting covered up with polish. I’ve seen women get manicures where they slap on nail polish, just because their friends are doing it, and the paint gets super matted and thick, sometimes, and the pads get worn. That’s the first abrasion, and eventually that affects the nail, and then the nail can’t get ready for when your hands are dry. That affects the bonding and the removal of nail color.”

Why Getting Your Nails Done Pays Off

“I don’t want women to feel like nail polish will take away their nail polish, or that they’ve got to have their nails done when they don’t need to. There are a lot of add-ons to nails that can take the place of painting nails. Often people think that if they get manicures done, they’ll be shiny. A lot of the materials that we use for beauty or nail polishes aren’t environmentally friendly, they have a lot of petroleum base, a lot of endocrine disruptors, and antibiotics, so the impact from what you’re putting on your nails is actually beyond the fact that you’re putting on nail polish. I recommend also a DIY polish that you can make. Go to the drugstore and get yourself a cake mix that has natural ingredients. It’s not that difficult for even the most novice to make your own polish. Pick three of the foundation colors that you’ve been wearing and also your favorite nail polish colors that you love. Mix them up, and that comes out to be your first base coat.”

Keep Your Manicures Healthy

“This also helps the upkeep of the nails. By applying the best products for your hands, it can stay nourished, like a neti pot. It has super-natural ingredients that are meant to help nourish your nails. It doesn’t dehydrate your nails, and it’s meant to help prevent bacteria, so it’s like an extra set of nails because you’re using a lot of cleaning products.”

Nail Polishes Are Not Hazardous

“I know a lot of women are worried that they’re going to leave the nail salon and get a bunch of nail polishes, and if they go home with clean nails, they’re going to get chipped or they’re going to get cracked in a weird spot. In a lot of salons, we don’t charge for removing polish; we’d rather take that from your skin and clean your eyes and your nose than start putting on another product and get pimples. Sometimes you need to remove polish in moderation, but the risk of going into a salon and leaving with cracked and chipped nails is something I think a lot of us need to be concerned about. For me, we do not offer nail polish remover in all of our salons, but if you’re a nail care consultant, tell me your concerns so we can handle them at the salon.”
