While deciding how to style our dark nails, we picked up a few favorite black manis from our likes of Nicole Miller, Marissa Webb, and Sisley. (Sisley’s “Black-Out” made a splash at NYFW this year.) While black nail art is big right now, it’s something that’s relatively new, having begun its Hollywood big-screen roots back in the 80s with Rick and Ron who famously “branded themselves black-out.” I’m an unabashed manicure lover and besides the obvious looks and finishes to play around with, I’ve always felt that the dark nail polish tone suits pretty much everything — from silhouettes to outfits.

Now, thanks to a rise in popularity, we are seeing an explosion of mélange nail art, where designers are using mixtures of black and white polishes to create manis that are anything but uniform.

“With beauty, as much as with fashion, there are trends that bubble up,” Erin Campbell, the creative director at Beauty.com, told Refinery29. “I’ve been noticing for the past two years that a lot of designers have really started to push the fashion direction of black nail polish: the dusty modern/Rock N Roll vibe. For instance, Brandon Maxwell chose something very light and blue with black polishes or Cushnie et Ochs created something really deep, dark, and industrial with dark polishes and burgundy.”

We couldn’t agree more! Let’s take a look at 11 of the more striking nail art looks. Don’t be surprised if you start seeing manis that really compliment your dress, but no matter what you do, these just might be your new favorite ways to rock nail art.
