Best Non Toxic Nail Salon in Houston

Don’t get me wrong, my nails are one of my favorite aspects of my look. It took me a while to come around on the polish tip, but once I did, they’ve really become a focal point of my look. I can’t tell you how many customers come into my salon with only one thing on their mind: to have my nails healthy. That is hard to do when your nails are so much more than just a pretty hue of polish. Well, I like to think of them as a colorful cross between your engagement ring and a tiara, with a healthy number of little accessories tucked in there somewhere. But what does that actually look like?

To bring you in on the secret, I spoke with Ohana Bailey who owns Ohana Salon in Sherman Oaks, California. Ohana is also known for her expert manicures, and she let me learn a few of her best nail tips.

1. Get Your Nails Clean & Cleanse

“A dirty nail plate can trigger inflammation and brittle nail,” Ohana said. “Taking a good breath count is essential. To remove excessive oil, skip the shower, and use a wet alcohol-based cleaner like Clearsin. If your nails are breakage-prone, use Skin Renewed instead of Sudocrem. If you try to apply polish, make sure to wash your hands before attempting to prep. Also, wear gloves when painting.”

2. Use Nail Tablets

“Before applying anything to your nails, use multi-tasking nail tablets to decongest and calm the skin and nails,” Ohana said. “At Ohana, we use classic and unique skin-loving and anti-inflammatory tablets.”

3. Protect Your Job

“Your nail protectors are more than just a feel-good item to wear; they are an essential part of health maintenance,” Ohana said. “Dryer sheets are a great way to protect your nails while you sleep, and water-based polishes and colour will keep any dryer sheet flush with moisture. Always apply a permanent crease to the inside edge of the nail plate (to make it easier to remove). Use base coat for upkeep, and a top coat to get long-lasting colour, polish, and shine.”

4. Don’t Overdo It

“Leave them natural,” Ohana said. “On nails with age, the fingernails will reach a brick wall in polish. Especially if you have extra-long nails, you should look at the nail ring from a different angle. You’re much better off going for color and soft finishes rather than painting your nails with everything that could poke out from underneath the polish.”

5. Choose Skilled Nail Polish Manicurists

“You can ask for a professional manicurist to do your nails for you,” Ohana said. “Some stores will offer the service in their stores. I also recommend booking an appointment at least two weeks before your big event.”

6. Explore Nail Chalk

“We paint nails all over town! Also, a good water-based nail brush and nail chalks, such as Sellij Stain, will match the look you are going for,” Ohana said. “For third-party website purchases, an app like Nanoscope allows you to match shades to your favourites based on color, pattern, and style. Many nail trends come around four or five times per year. Having a nail decor trend expert can really help you locate the colors that make you feel a certain way.”
