Best Non Toxic Nail Salon in Houston

By Michelle Leone, founder of Leo’s Nails in Washington, D.C.

When I first opened my nail salon more than 25 years ago, I made a promise: No one would be seen with dirty nails. The term “dirty nails” was derived from the fact that most gel manicures fail to blend in with the healthy nails that we all have on most days.

These days, more and more experts are shunning gel and acrylic manicures, which strip hair from nails and suck away natural oils and moisture. Plus, they’re expensive and damaging to your skin. Here are six reasons to opt for natural-textured nails instead:

1. Natural nails are softer.

For years, I made my customers apply my gel nails every day, including Sunday. It was always my standard manicure, but the beauty of it was that people never wanted to take them off.

And now, decades later, a lot of me feel the same way. Natural nails don’t feel as crunchy and as tough like those gel nails.

2. Natural nails provide more natural hair coverage.

Some people are trying to wear longer hair on top of their nails to hide imperfections on their face. But if you’re wearing your hair up or down your fingers, natural-textured nails can help with hair coverage that I’ve come to appreciate myself.

3. Natural-textured nails provide better skin care.

When I talk to my nail techs about how to keep their nails healthy, one of the answers they always give me is “better skin care.” It has gotten me to choose higher-quality moisturizers and additional natural ingredients that I found on blogs and from online recommendations, like glycerin and olive oil.
