How to Decrease the Size of Your Baby’s Nails While Also Be Stylish

We know you’re probably trying your hardest to cut the corners on your budget this holiday season, but we also know you also don’t want to sacrifice your little one’s beauty. Being able to nip a tiny ding here and there without sacrificing her cute style is a side benefit. Luckily, looking cute on your little one is definitely a plus. So for those of you going ahead and frantically scratching the itch on your wallet, here are five easy DIY hacks for trimming your baby’s nails.

1. Stick a nail file onto the baby’s nail bed. Nails tend to grow horizontally, so there’s no need to cut off the entire nail to cut her nail short. For the shortest nail, trim the horizontal part, leaving the tips long enough for her to use her claws to groom the edges. Use a cheap file for cheap. The cheaper it is, the cleaner it will be.

2. Use a cotton swab. Since your baby may be picking on her nails by accident, dust with a cotton swab. Allow her to scrub the cotton swab into the nail, and brush it back and forth until the nail is clean, or you can brush her finger nails.

3. Cut an inch-long piece of wood with a razor or sharp edge. Roll the wood over the nail’s surface, and tuck the wood up under her nail so it’ll appear smaller on the surface. This will cause it to look like you’ve shaved it.

4. Make a French tip. One of our favorite ways to trim your baby’s nails is with a French tip. On the bottom half of her fingernail, start to chop the nail short. With the clippers or nail file, shave down all of the nail at the bottom of the nail — that’s the tip. Leave the top side and sides of the nail unsprung for shape. You can do this if your baby’s nails aren’t broken by now, or if you’ve gotten one of these at least one of her nails.
