Best Non Toxic Nail Salon in Houston

As anyone with a healthy toe file can tell you, polished nails can be a fantastic self-identifier. Sure, they look cute when pressed, they look great winking, and they look super chic in accessories — but that’s all superficial. True beauty, especially at this time of year, is about feeling confident when you can see it, and want to turn the same shade.

Nails above the fingertips can be difficult to get right and take a good couple hours to get done correctly, so though they’re fun to show off, they aren’t the easiest to maintain. But we finally have the straight goods on how to take your nails from spring finger-bangs and go au naturel, literally.

1. Wash them, or brush off excess. A quick ol’ soap and water wash will make them look cleaner, dryer, and more white.

2. Let them dry for at least 15 minutes. Because there’s something to be said for getting your nails that much longer and getting to let your natural color emerge. But, that’s being impatient and passive.

3. Shape them. Check out a professional’s website for a list of dos and don’ts.

4. Repair. New nail polish can add a pop of color, but your natural nail color is better than a fade. Even the most delicate ones can be touched up during the dryer steam, and will leave you beautiful and soft as you go.

5. Apply conditioner. It can go over your polish, lacquer, or coat entirely. The more stretchy the product, the easier it is to apply.

6. Apply a top coat. It might require some cover-up because it won’t completely cover the lacquer, but I’ve found that it adds a glimmer of interest. Most formulas are great. If you find one that sinks into your skin with no gloss, use it. (Whether your nails are healthy or not, it’s always worth having a good-quality top coat.)

7. Have your clippers sharpened. This can help with grease buildup. Plus, they can add a sort of sharpness to your cuticles and make for a clean look.

8. Use a straightener. Unless you’re letting them dry for hours, your hands are super delicate and they need to be maintained. These serums and blow-dryers can temporarily give your nails a smoother base without stripping them of their natural polish. (Or if you’re just looking for the perfect finishing touch, add some rubber seal tape to your bare finger to show off those polished nails.)

So if you’re ready to take your nails all the way up, here’s what to do.
