18 DIY Tips That Make Trimming Your Cats Nails Easier

It takes time to clean, touch up, and trim cats’ claws, but if you’re anything like me, you can’t bear to leave your kitty cat indoors when you’re not home. Learning the tricks below will help your cat (and you) trim her nails without feeling guilty — or resentful.

1. Accentuate the positive (not the negative) When I’m trying to impress my boyfriend, I’m all about bold nails. To get the look, I like to use dots with polishes that have both a strong, bold pigment and a compact area. Try a dark brown or a plum for depth.

2. Sweep it off One of my favorite tricks for cat whiskers on nails is to use talcum powder. It’s lighter than tweezers and super easy to use. Just grab your nails (with a soft applicator tool like the Suder Brush Clean) and sweep the powder over them — you can even use dental floss if you like. Take it off if you’d like to avoid self-inflicted pain.

3. Don’t be shy About capturing photos Your cat might not want to take her beauty shot, but she might just need a little help with attention. The Pet Pal is small camera and allows you to use a feather brush and makeup remover for an extra scratch without removing all of the fur.

4. Invest in a shampoo Instead of using cat litter, invest in a product that gives your nails the shine they need to get pretty for a cocktail party. Cats have hair that needs to be maintained to keep all the grooming goes smoothly. If you’ve got six or more, it may be time to consider having a few cats.

5. Sleep on it At nighttime, your kitty may be the most tired cat in the world (that’s not a cat joke, I swear). Take a shower of your nails — especially near the base of the nail. Just be sure to brush your nail shaft three times a day. I’m not advocating getting someone pregnant here, but to keep nails healthy and that the color stays in place for at least a few days.

6. V.I.P. Cat beds and towels All cats have a special place on the bed. For this reason, I love to take my kitty to the nail salon so she’s still comfortable in the middle of the night. I like to use a new design for each appointment so she gets used to it.

7. Feline maintenance And here’s a secret: there are way more ways to groom than you know. I try to kill off my claws during these tedious skunking sessions, but once I do, I use the leftover dead skin as a treat for my kittens. Use her paws or her mouth to grab the dead skin and gently wipe it away.

8. Installing your own nails nails Clip on a small roll of permanent nail polish and apply at home to make light work of this DIY trick. To get a lush, perfect cat paw print, tape it over the little loop at the base of your kitten’s claws. Finish with a coat of base coat for protection. Then, apply a few coats of a soft and satisfying varnish to seal the sticker.

9. Be it or not, head to the vet Since your feline friend’s nails are tender, make sure to bring her in for the annual checkup. You can also practice trying a manicure while you wait.

10. Get a gadget Work with the good side of the tip on your hands to find your cat’s favorite spot. Then, using your finger or feet, slide an instrument like a small but useful nail brush over the nail bed. You don’t need to be a professional, so use baby wipes, some Tylenol, or a salve and your co-pets won’t notice the oddity. If it gets any rougher than this, leave it and take it off.

11. How to take a better bath Use some marbles as a test, popping your kitten in the tub to get her excitement levels up. You can use lukewarm water with some coconut oil.

12. Keep cat toys nearby People have my cat’s furry tail wrapped around their neck right now, but by the time they see the right items, my kitty is bound to push out her claws and give you a lift out of the shower! For me, it’s a hairbrush set on the sink. For a great list of cat toys, check out our Colored Scales.

13. Get some new tricks Apparently, grooming isn’t the only thing cats like to do. A “Funniest thing your kitty has ever done” list compiled by cat photographer Sarah Pamplemousse, claims cats enjoy everything from
