Susan Kare has designed hundreds of software icons, including the Apple World icon (pictured above), which is traditionally seen when booting up a computer. Although Apple originally hired Kare for the Macintosh logo — which is now has a fashion twist with the addition of the womenswear-inspired icons — she wasn’t immediately thrilled about the gig.

“I was so afraid that I would screw up the logo,” she told Quartz. “I worked on the Macintosh logo, which is now a beautiful icon, a little dog with the head and nose out. I really believed that could be just the logo. When Steve Jobs hired me for the Macintosh, I was worried that I would screw up the design.”

That’s exactly what she didn’t do. She created icons to match the shape of the keyboard — and then revealed them, saying, “I was afraid that the move was going to mess up the Macintosh logo, but the keyboard kind of rhymed and worked. I’m glad they did it.”

Kare is credited with helping to define the look of the computer in the 80s. As Quartz points out, the designer often states that the icon most often associated with her work is the Worldwide
