Best Non Toxic Nail Salon in Houston

Have beautiful nails because you want to. Like you wanted lipstick (or teeth), or a tiara (as you have learned in many public school history classes), nice nails make you feel gorgeous. Though, I suppose it is part of the rock star, supermodel aesthetic that I have been convinced I was born to follow.

So for my birthday last week, my makeup artist, who is so good at putting blush on my bare skin, also touched up my inner beauty. During the second half of her three-hour session, we looked at my nails, doing a salon hands test — she went around my fingers, moving from the top to the bottom of my pinky and manicured it over time as I revealed my true nails color. Basically, we took a picture and described the photo as something like paint color.

Here are a few things I learned from my amazing human eye-picked nails, things I can do while hanging out at a party, which I can do while scrolling through Instagram, and things that I do on a daily basis to prolong the beauty oomph.

13. Brush your nails three times a day for three minutes.

While not a feat of willpower, you can make them fresh and ready for your day ahead simply by the act of gentle brushing with a tweezer or your finger on the tips of your nails. If you can’t get to the salon, your nail brush will do! Like a shampoo, your body scrub, even a nail polish remover, these simple tasks will keep you caring for your nails in a spa-like way.

12. Use the right kind of polish.

Actually, the right kind is the one that will give you that glossy finish. Pick a special cream-colored polish like Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Royal Peach, which I wore as a birthday present to myself last week. That pick made me feel like a $300 dollar brand-new car, but it looked brand-new! It has a long lasting, stay-put (not so shiney) finish so you won’t be constantly washing it. For sheer polishes, go for something shiny and easy-on-the-tongue like OPI’s Brilliance, a no-fuss one-coat clean up bottle.

11. Fix them if they get a little crusty.

Nails are natural acne and crusty? Just relax! Crumbly, crumbling nails are nothing to be ashamed of, or to clean up. Get a sugar scrub and a honey cloth to clean up the crusty areas. You can also lather some baby powder on the edges of your nails to give it a ghost-like appearance. What good would a spick-and-span, shine-enhancing polish be if it wasn’t in your blood?

10. Color in your nails every once in a while.

It doesn’t need to be red or sparkly or neon, so it can be a color that you know will make you feel great. I chose a shade that could make me look like a favorite Hollywood actress or one of fashion’s favorite shoe designers, anyone wearing Christian Louboutin or Dolce & Gabbana, respectively. How good is that?
