When you think of nail polish, you probably think of a certain brand, a certain shade, the grapefruit shade of your choice, and perhaps the golden polish you had as a teen. You probably didn’t think of base coat, and you probably never thought of base coat in relation to polish.
While you may have never thought of base coat in regards to nail polish, you probably realize that base coat would protect your nails from having any breakage at all, without damaging the polish around them. That’s why you hear all the time about gel polishes, which is basically a base coat with a “gel” inside so you can have the polish grip the nail underneath.
That’s all well and good, but you don’t need gel to protect your nails from damage. What you really need is a base coat. When a polish is done to your nails, a base coat is applied, keeping any marks on your nails and any deterioration away from your nails permanently.
There are many ways to achieve a base coat, but a lot of people think of using a strong base coat like gel polish. That’s not the case. When you put a strong base coat over your nail, you’re actually exposing your nails to that dry oil. This oil mixes with your nails. The oil basically prevents the nail bed from thinning and sinking into your nail bed. You have the same problem with polishes and other base coat products.
Frequently, nail polish can be changed for your own personal benefit. You can change your polish as often as you want. If you’re applying a strong base coat over your nails, however, you want it to last forever. You don’t want to constantly reach for the gel polish to get that nail powder off the nails.
To get it right, you need to keep a nail file in your bag to remove any dead or weak nail edges from around your nails. You also need to be extra careful about using strong base coat products at the office. The very sharp base coat edges will slice the top of your fingers, and that’s not very good for your fingers at all.
When you use strong base coat products at home, you want to make sure that they give your nails a deep, well-sealed seal. If a base coat doesn’t give you a firm yet soft seal, then you might want to try to paint your nails with a base coat just to protect your nails.
All that said, you may not think of base coat when it comes to nail polish, but base coat is all that you need. As a matter of fact, base coat is the foundation of everything on your nails, so when it comes to keeping your nails strong and healthy, base coat is the base that should be top of mind.
